Web 2.0, Social Media and Physiotherapy.

Over the last few months we’ve had a little look at the Web 2.0 applications and the social media tools that are available to us in the physiotherapy community. We have realised that they present us with ways to gather and share knowledge, as well as collaborate and network remotely and also more effectively and efficiently.

  • From an educational perspective blogging is ideal for reflective practice and wikis for collaboration,
  • in business blogging, Facebook, twitter and instant messaging allows us to quickly develop digital strategies to market to and communicate with our clients on-line,
  • in research we can networking with our research groups, search for articles in social bookmarking sites, collaboratively edit documents and collect data from participants on-line,
  • and for each individual practitioner there are multiple opportunities for networking, collaboration and autonomous learning.

Having covered all of this NOW is the time to start to have a play on the web. Here are some ideas for you to get started:

  1. Start a blog and post one entry (or more if you get into it!!) each week
  2. Follow at least five blogs (including this blog, Physiopedia and   Physiospot) and comment on them regularly
  3. Sign up to Twitter, start tweeting and connecting with like minded individuals
  4. Find and follow 5 or more physiotherapists on Twitter
  5. Create an account at Physiopedia, create your profile and edit or add content
  6. Connect with me on Twitter or LinkedIn

However, a word of warning…….

Don’t get overwhelmed by the information available.   Once you start exploring the Web and what is out there it is easy fall victim of information overload.   This can lead to a reluctance to become involved which is a wasted opportunity.   I’ll be dealing with how to avoid this in a future post.

As a health care professional it is very important to be professional at all times when we engage in on-line activities.   The Web, and especially social media, is a public platform so it’s worth remembering that your use of it may become part of your ‘permanent record’.   Again this will be the topic of a future post.

PT2010: A Collaborative Classroom wiki, and so much more…..

Today was my turn at PT2010!   Despite having the last session on the last afternoon but were really pleased to have a small group of highly engaged people in the room… or that’s how it seemed from the front anyway!   Following an introduction to wikis and a guided tour of Physiopedia we had a very successful editing session where everyone got to create their profile and add images and video to the site.

Thank you to all who attended and as promised here are the slides from the presentation:

If you have any thoughts or ideas following on from this session please don’t hesitate to get in touch (I’ll be in touch on my return from Idaho!!).

PT2010: Online Collaboration Tools That Enhance Learning and Productivity

Eric Robertson and Tim Noteboom are talking about collaboration tools this morning in the Tech Savvy session at PT2010.

People, productivity software, collaborative software and methods are the elements of collaboration. Web 2.0 allows more collaboration. Consumers are using Web 2.0 tools to find out more about their healthcare. Healthcare practitioners are using Web 2.0 tools for gathering information, education, and also collaboration and care delivery. There were some great examples of how new web technology is changing health care and how it can be usefully integrated into physiotherapy practice and education.

We had another exploration of Web 2.0 Tools with a focus on collaboration including:

  • RSS feeds and Google Reader with some nice examples of applications in teaching and learning.
  • Using Voice Thread as an audio replacement for traditional discussion forums.

Then we moved on to Social Media:

  • The power of getting a message out using social media
  • Crowdsourcing as a solution to answer questions
  • Great examples of using Twitter for professional applications
  • The importance of developing a social media strategy and maintaining privacy

Finally there were some great case studies presented to put all the information into perspective, examples of how both Tim and Eric have used new technology in their learning and teaching.

How to create an RSS feed from a PubMed search

Wouldn’t it be great for our learning and evidence based practice if we could be alerted every time something related to our specific area of physiotherapy interest was published in an on-line journal.   Well now you can!   In my post about RSS feeds I mentioned that you could create RSS feeds from PubMed searches, here is how to do it:
